THE COTTAGE, KANTURK

Influenced by Tudor and Renaissance styles, with a traditional Irish castellated eastern entrance, Kanturk once provided a defence against English settlers. Now, it stands bleakly empty, surrounded by forest. Kanturk Castle, built 1580 as a huge tower house for the McCarthy clan. Although it was a house it still needed to have defensive capabilities. Note the gun loops beside the back door. Kanturk Castle combines a number of different architectural styles, making it difficult to pinpoint a specific date for its construction. However, it was normal for a major work such as this to span several years, and the date of completion/suspension of work was probably close to 1618.
